Templeton Foundation Press, through its Publishing Subsidy Program which seeks to support publishing projects that pursue research and discovery in the field of science and religion, has awarded $10,000 to Abingdon Press to help broaden the reach of Can You Believe in God and Evolution: A Guide for the Perplexed by Ted Peters and Martinez Hewlett (Abingdon Press, 2006, 0687335515).
Can You Believe in God and Evolution? contains a thoughtful and lively discussion of current culture wars over evolution as it tackles a wide variety of questions concerning faith and science. Ted Peters and Martinez Hewlett, a theologian and a scientist, provide a solid understanding of the issues and positions involved, including Creationism, Intelligent Design, and Evolutionary Theism. Forged in their teaching experience, the authors have a keen eye for what's at stake and offer a steady hand to guide Christians through the confusion, showing how they can connect their faith in God with a scientific understanding of evolution. In simple language they sift through the technical jargon and name-calling that can help Christians find a way forward.
A portion of this grant will support an event on March 4, 2007 featuring the authors at the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City. Partnering with COR and its pastor, Adam Hamilton, will broaden the conversation begun by the authors and will extend the church’s reach into its community. Participants will have an opportunity to hear presentations by the authors and engage in informal dialogue.
Can You Believe in God and Evolution? is suitable for adult study groups and can also be an important resource for pastors and church leaders as they prepare children and youth to answer their own inevitable questions related to faith, science, and vocation. It will help the church equip teachers and administrators who work in various school systems.
